About Head Start

Head Start is a federal program that promotes the school readiness of children ages 5 and under from low-income families by enhancing their cognitive, social, and emotional development. The program promotes family strengths for children’s long-term benefit.

Program Information

  • Has a $5 million budget: Head Start, Early Head Start, IL State Board of Education, Child-Adult Care Food Program, Full-day Child Care, Champaign County Developmental Disabilities Board.
  • Has 106 staff members: 62 teaching staff, 12 family advocates, six bus drivers, three cooks, three clerks, four partnership mentors, one family services specialist, one mental health specialist, a secretary, and 13 managers.

The mission of Champaign County Head Start/Early Head Start is to support the diverse children and families of our community in reaching their fullest potential by providing comprehensive services and developing partnerships that enhance child and family development, health, and education.
