Head Start
Nutritional Services
Champaign County Head Start/Early Head Start (CCHS) provides nutritious and diverse meals and snacks for enrolled children with the support of the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). The national Head Start Program Performance Standards requires programs to serve foods that are low in fat, sugar and salt. CCHS also makes an effort to offer fresh fruits and vegetables in season and whole grain foods as much as possible.
CCHS purchases iron-fortified formula for enrolled infants. For children needing milk substitutes, CCHS provides 8th Continent Soymilk (Original).
CCHS contracts nutrition support from a local registered dietician. The nutritionist offers families nutrition education through evening home visits, phone contacts, grocery store tours, and nutrition events. In addition, the nutritionist provides nutritional recommendations for menus and procedures to the program.
