Household Hazardous Waste Collection

Household Hazardous Waste

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) sponsors one-day Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collections from 8 am to 3 pm on scheduled Saturdays. The IEPA's one-day HHW collections for 2012 have been completed.

Additionally, the IEPA makes available four long-term ("permanent") facilities for disposal of HHW; however, all are located in northern portions of Illinois.

For additional information regarding IEPA’s one-day collection schedule, or the long-term HHW facilities, visit the IEPA website: http://www.epa.state.il.us/land/hazardous-waste/household-haz-waste/

Safety Tips for HHW:
  • Dispose of HHW at collection events or at a long-term HHW disposal facilities
  • Do not flush HHW down sinks, toilets, or storm drains
  • Keep original labels intact
  • Do not combine products
  • Avoid buying more than what you need
  • Donate extra, non-prescription HHW

Compact Fluorescent 'Bulbs' (CFLs)

Compact Fluorescent 'Bulbs' (CFLs) and Other Fluorescent Lamps

  • CFLs and other fluorescent bulbs often break when thrown into a dumpster, trash can or compactor, or when they end up in a landfill or incinerator. Recycling CFLs prevents the release of mercury into the environment.
  • Recycling CFLs and other fluorescent bulbs allows the reuse of the glass, metals and other materials that make up fluorescent lights. Virtually all components of a fluorescent bulb can be recycled.

In Illinois, mercury-containing lamps discarded by households are not subject to hazardous waste rules and can be accepted by municipal-waste landfills; however, the IEPA recommends that CFLs be recycled. Visit http://earth911.com/recycling/hazardous/cfl/ for further information:

Paint – Latex

Paint – Latex

'Latex' or 'water-based' paints are not household items that should be delivered to household hazardous waste collection events. Modern latex paint does not contain hazardous constituents and can be dealt with in cheaper, more efficient ways than at a HHW collection.

For recommendations about handling leftover latex paint, visit the IEPA ‘Used Paint Disposal Alternatives’ webpage at:
