This class will review effective
procedures for testing drivers for intoxication at roadside, including the
recognition and interpretation of evidence indicating DUI violations, and the
proper methods for administering standardized field sobriety tests approved by
the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Participants
will view NHTSA approved videos to assess a subject's impairment and record
observations of SFST performance. Articulating DUI evidence clearly and
convincingly in written reports and verbal testimony will also be covered.
The admissibility of Horizontal Gage Nystagmus (HGN) in Illinois will be
extensively reviewed and discussed. Instruction will prepare officers for
inevitable cross-examination on HGN testing in the field.
