Bernard S. Hogancamp
Sergeant Bernie Hogancamp
is a 29-year veteran of the Homewood (IL) Police Department, having served in
most operational positions throughout his career. He has been a patrol
officer, field training officer, plainclothes tactical officer and detective.
Since his promotion to sergeant in 1994, he has served as a patrol watch
commander, tactical unit commander, investigations unit commander and training
coordinator. He is currently the watch commander of the 3-11 shift and is
assigned to oversee traffic grant administration, force policy revision, and the
drafting of new public safety ordinances.
Over the years he has received numerous awards and commendations including:
Warren Award (Police Training Institute), Officer of the Year (Homewood Chamber
of Commerce), Investigator of the Year (International Assoc. of Financial Crimes
Investigators-Midwest Region), Meritorious Service Award (Cook County Sheriff's
Police), Commissioner's Award (Cook County Commissioner's Office), and the
Academic Award (Police Training Institute). He is a 1995 graduate of the
Northwestern University School of Police Staff & Command and holds a Bachelor of
Arts Degree from Chicago State University.
He has extensive experience as an instructor in a variety of law enforcement
areas and has lectured before community groups and college students. He
has been an in-house instructor for numerous recruits in field training and
other areas, including Impact Weapon certifications and refreshers, Firearms,
Defensive Tactics, Use of Force, Rapid Deployment, Juvenile Law, Insurance Law,
Emergency Train Evacuation, Control and Compliance Holds, Traffic Stop Tactics,
and Domestic Violence. He has developed and instructed a variety of
courses for North East Multi-Regional Training (NEMRT) located in North Aurora.
These include: Tactical Ground-Fighting, Police Cyclist Certification, Basic
Mountain Bike Maintenance, Advanced Interactive Simulator Instructor,
PowerPoint, Ballistic Shield for Patrol Officers, Ballistic Shield
Train-the-Trainer, Police Report Writing, Use of Force Reporting, and Modern
Warrior Tactical Baton Techniques. He recently completed the Force Science
Analyst certification and is working with colleagues to develop a Force
Investigator's course for NEMRT in 2010.
Sgt. Hogancamp has been invited to speak at professional conferences for the
International Law Enforcement Trainers and Educators Association (ILEETA), the
International Police Mountain Bike Association (IPMBA), and the Midwest Expo (IACP).
He currently serves on the Executive Board of IPMBA (treasurer) and on the Law
Enforcement Technology Committee at Governor's State University.
Since 2006, Sgt. Hogancamp has been an adjunct instructor for the Institute for
Legal Studies Department at Northwestern College. He teaches a variety of
undergraduate criminal justice courses that are delivered in both classroom and
on-line formats.
